We are a grain free, refined sugar free and dairy free bakery based in Los Angeles, CA. The name may be deceiving, but Pasadena-based chocolatier Haris Car makes what might be the best chocolate croissant in the city. Car took close to a year to meticulously develop the pastry, which is served warm, with a glossy, shatteringly crisp exterior. Inside each baked wonder is a trio of chocolate batons, sourced thoughtfully and ethically by Car himself. Baker Jennifer Yee believed it was possible to make top-notch baked goods without butter.

Owner Pastry Chef David Benton started Sugarsweet Cookie + Cake Studio in 2009 baking in his duplex kitchen in East Oakland. Customers and studiers filled the large, wooden tables and were surrounded by bright natural lighting from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Charlotte Wells might have heard me weeping at the premiere of her film. “There was someone behind me crying quite audibly,” says the Scottish director, who was still putting the finishing touches to her feature debut, Aftersun, when it crash-landed at Cannes back in May. Perhaps that is what comes from being a wunderkind with a generous dose of life experience. Murmur of the Hearts by Sylvia Chang was the last film that I sobbed at in the way that people describe sobbing at this film. I saw that in the midst of writing this and was inconsolable. It was so limiting in a way for her, whereas for me, it felt of infinite possibility. People try to box it in, in terms of distributor or the support that I received. But I wasn’t necessarily thinking about the form conforming to anything other than pursuing which films interested me.

Aftersun builds its tension by allowing the audience to slowly see more and more of Calum’s pain, until we watch him break down crying. He could have died due to some of his self-destructive behavior, or his mental health issues could have gotten so bad that he disappeared, never to be seen again. His fate isn’t confirmed, but this is a film about grief and loss, at least one aspect of it. So whatever has happened to Calum, the loving father from the vacation is gone forever. We then see Calum recording her as she boards a plane back to Edinburgh to be with her mother and return to her life.

Calum is a thirty-something father, and even though he had separated from Sophie’s mother, he continued to maintain a healthy relationship.
Mescal, meanwhile, has completely outdone himself in the role of Calum, a young father clearly lost in life and wrought with mental health issues. Aesthetically, Aftersun is decidedly pared back – a simple, heartbreaking story of the relationship between a father and daughter. Though it’s a bittersweet tale, it still leaves viewers with a warm glow. The film’s director is Charlotte Wells, who hails from Scotland, and this is her first feature-length film.
You can just feel the weight of his absence so much that it seems like the movie makes a big declaration about his fate. As Philip Roth observed, getting people wrong — again and again — is a common human pastime. Best of all are the ellipses the film elegantly leaves, gradually drawing the viewer in with its woozy atmospherics and unspoken questions.
As an eleven-year-old, she did not know that would be the last dance she would have with her father. It seemed as if she could still feel the warmth of the last hug before leaving. She would have held him a little longer if she knew what the future had in store. Aftersun takes on that profound challenge with graceful imagery, technical precision, and fine-tuned performances from Mescal and Corio.
As the major awards shows loom, Wells spoke to THR about what the positive reception has been like, what she considers the most pivotal scenes and how she chose the tunes for the movie’s crucial musical moments. Wells was born and raised in Edinburgh, but moved to the US in 2012 to study film at New York University. That lucidity is everywhere in Aftersun, which paints its characters’ interior lives in quiet, telling strokes reminiscent of Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, who served as a producer on the film. Does it speak to an audience hunger for films that aren’t too prescriptive? One thing that struck me was the second we finished screening in Cannes, this young man came up to me and shared his own and his mother’s experience with depression. Many scenes in Aftersun feature little to no dialogue, and that restraint proves essential.

Charlotte Wells’s debut feature film, “Aftersun,” is emotionally profound and authentic in its craft. The film effectively captures the pain of lost time and the hopelessly overwhelming desire to understand a long-lost person. The chicken chop comes with roasted potatoes and garden vegetables. The portion was, again, very generous with many slices of beef found all over the plate. It didn’t have a strong wok hei but it is very well seasoned. I wished that they gave us more sauce to go around as the hor fun got quite dry as we were halfway through it. This spacious and stylish coffee destination is busy no matter the time of day—no surprise, seeing as it’s one of Highland Park’s top shops to grab a cup and a croissant, now with a second location in Downtown L.A.'s Fashion District. The original location's tall ceilings, tiled floors and diverse seating options spread between tables, couches and a patio out back make for a fashionable setting, while the toasts, breakfast burritos, and Sugarbloom Bakery pastries make for a solid meal. The espresso blend rotates frequently, but teas and specialty coffee drinks remain more or less the same. We love the Figueroa, made with sweetened condensed milk, espresso, milk and cinnamon, topped with a Maria Cookie. No matter which location you visit, the beans at Boy & the Bear get roasted three times a week, which makes a major difference in the quality of each cup.

And Eagle Rock locations have plenty of tables and a few charging outlets apiece, while the Inglewood shop’s lofted couch seating is more conducive to casual morning or afternoon hangs. The all-day menu here features a flexible kind of global cuisine, not to mention a handful of truly good coffee-based mocktails exclusive to that space. Locations are available for takeout and online pre-order. Well for Mad Lab, one of Downtown's top roasters, the name says it all.

This city always has plenty of drivers available and it’s an easy way to get between the different areas. The majority of Seattle hotels provide a shuttle service to the airport and the cruise ports, for free or at a nominal cost. This four star contemporary Residence Inn by Marriot offers well-appointed guest rooms with flatscreen TV and Wi-Fi. Enjoy a free hot breakfast to set you up for the day when sightseeing or heading to the cruise port.
Located 2.5 miles from the airport, it overlooks the water and trees of Angle Lake and the park is just a few yards along the street. Food served in the restaurant comes with rave reviews, and there’s a spacious gym if you want to workout. Despite being so close to the airport the rooms are well soundproofed to ensure you get a great night’s sleep.
This places you squarely in downtown, near many of the major attractions that Seattle has to offer. Unfortunately, there are no hotels directly adjacent to Pier 91, as it is primarily industrial and residential in the adjoining neighborhoods. Still, a short Uber/Lyft ride can get you to the Pier 91 in about 10 minutes.

The hotel is small, with only about 75 rooms that look out onto the waterfront. It’s floor-to-ceiling windows will also make sure you have a great view of the bay and the buzzing activity of the city. Westfield Southcenter Mall also offers a complimentary local shuttle to the mall from the hotel.
The onsite H-Bar offers a full menu of drinks and the restaurant has plenty of tempting options. The Inn at the Market is part of the lively Pike Place Market building and is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and bars. Pier 66 is a 10-minute walk away and the Seattle Art Museum is just around the corner. The décor is pure Pacific Northwest style with a nod to 20th-century design. Please note that hotel prices per night vary by season and demand.
Three in-house restaurants give you a choice of places to eat and there’s a fitness suite available too. If you enjoy luxury upgrades, treat yourself to a Regency Club add-on. You get access to a terrace with a city view and complimentary evening hors d’oeuvres. Hyatt House Seattle Downtown is one of the best places to stay if you’re visiting the Space Needle – it’s so close it is almost touching the iconic structure. Pier 91 is a little over 2 miles away and Pike Place Market is a 20-minute stroll. It’s a hip and trendy hotel with 172 suite-style rooms all with plenty of room to spread out.
